Paris budget tip: FREE view of the Eiffel Tower

Paris is an expensive city to visit but that doesn’t mean you have to give up items on your to-do list like see a great view of the Eiffel Tower. While there are plenty of great places to see the Eiffel Tower like the top of the Arch de Triomphe or the observation tower on top of Tour Montparnasse, these cost money and sometimes you just need a little budget help.

One of my favorite places to see the Eiffel Tower and a really lovely view of the cityscape of Paris is from the terrace on top of Galeries Lafayette department store! And importantly, it is completely FREE!

Galeries Lafayette is located at 40 Boulevard Haussmann in the 9th arrondissement (metro: Chaussée d’Antin – La Fayette) and the best way to get to the terrace is to take the escalators up at each floor. There are elevators but they are very slow arriving, small and often very full.

As you plan both your Paris itinerary and your Paris budget, be sure to consider the Galeries Lafayette terrace.

  1. Funnily enough I was in Paris for a surprise day trip last month and although I didn’t need to do any sightseeing while there as I lived there for 10 years and I basically went for lunch and shopping with friends, I popped up to the terrace of Printemps just next to Galeries Lafayette to get a quick fix of the Eiffel Tower!! I agree that from these terraces you get lovely views, not only of the Eiffel Tower but Palais Garnier and the Sacré Coeur too. Thanks for linking up to #AllAboutFrance

  2. This is a great tip! Those department stores offer such a pretty view of the city – and the price is right! Have you been to the terrace at Printemps? I know the view is about the same, but I think I prefer it to Galaries Lafayette because it’s three stories higher. And surprisingly, the self-service cafe on the rooftop of Printemps is quite reasonably priced, so I’ve grabbed a quick lunch (and a view!) with friends visiting me in Paris, and it’s always a hit!
