Traveling is so much more than checking off a list of must sees. There are adventures and experiences that enrich and add depth to our memories of our visits. That is why I include a personal story of experience every month from serendipitously attending Mass at Notre Dame to a sudden change in pace while walking along the Champs Elysees.
Versailles had many but I decided to share one of the more humorous.
It all started the night before when I forgot to recharge the batteries in my camera. I realized this too late…as in when my camera died. I had taken a whopping 4 pictures. We were only at the Royal Chapel and had a whole castle left to explore.
Conveniently, I was with 3 other people. So, my cousin offered me her digital camera. It died. My aunt then handed me her digital camera. It died. I’m not joking…all three digital cameras dead. I couldn’t believe it. Here I was standing in Versailles with no camera. All this beauty and nothing to document it with.
But, then my mom pulls out her disposable wind up camera! I’m pretty sure a I heard trumpets sound and a light beam shine down on her head. She hadn’t wanted to get it out because she was embarrassed that is it was so old school. I didn’t care. I had a camera…that worked.
Admittedly it was a little tough to get low light pictures and close-ups since there were no settings but I was up to the challenge. In the end, I got some great “old school” pictures that we now get by adding a filter. Looks like I took them in the 70s.
Mom totally saved the day!
Moral of the story: Travel with your mom. Moms always save the day. And if you aren’t traveling with your mom, remember to charge your batteries!
